Color drenching. It’s everywhere.
Color drenching is when you use one color tone throughout a whole room - the walls, the trim, the ceiling, sometimes even the furniture. I’ve even seen another trend called double-drenching, where you choose analogous colors (colors close to each other in the color wheel) so you have a bit of color variation between your walls and trim and each shade compliments each other.
Many of the examples get spaces away from neutrals - a lot less white, grey, and gold - and embrace deep and mid-tone hues, painting everything from floors to ceilings. And the color of the moment? A deep, dark red or a dark, warm purple-red. In layman’s terms, burgundy. At this point and time, burgundy is my love language. If it comes in burgundy, I’m going to love it.
Although, I can’t help but be the tiniest bit triggered by the trend. As someone who lives in an area where the median home was built in 1940, we joke that every house has at least one room painted bright red. Red was a popular color choice in the 1990’s, especially as most home trends focused on a tuscan palette of browns, beiges, red, sage and rustic golds. As those homeowners move and sell (or not, lol), we’re definitely getting a look at some pretty crazy paint color choices. Will we look back at color drenching in horror as we have to not only re-paint walls, but trim and ceilings too? Or are the moody, cozy color choices going to survive through the next interior design trends?

Used in the right space, the color of the moment is so beautiful. Paint can be so transformative, and even if your home leans neutral in tonality you can still have spaces that are a complete departure. Take that bold color risk or use it as the perfect color injection if even reading this is making you break out in a cold sweat. Let’s be honest, colorful spaces are more fun anyways! Burgundy, here we come.
full color takeover
For those who are equally obsessed with the boldness of color drenching, let’s talk paint colors. These are just a handful of some of the top picks out there across brands - definitely do some sampling to ensure the hue is giving the tone you want and more importantly, working in your lighting. Also think about the finish - are you loving the look of lime wash (and does lime wash work alondside your homes finishes, time period, ceiling height, etc), are you wanting glossy trim, or are you wanting a moody matte? So many decisions, I know, but a really good place to start.
Trendy brands, but spot on colors,
There are some paint brands out there that absolutely nail these color palettes, so don’t be afraid to add them into your mix of samples!

Lime wash and roman clay,
I am no lime wash expert, but Portola Paints seems to be to go-to. Comment if you have another brand you’ve used and love, I’m sure there are others as this trend has taken off.

Traditional paint brands,
The more-traditional paint brands always stay on top of what is popular. Tried and true, exploring their options is always my first stop.

Cabinetry, woodwork and wallpaper,
Committing to full wall takeovers may be daunting, I get it! Instead try focusing on your cabinetry and woodwork in a spot that make sense - think mudroom, bar, powder room, even your kitchen island or a set of kitchen cabinets. The application of this color in these kitchens is stunning - I saved this tiktok, just imagine this color on this standalone island.
And lets not forget about wallpaper! I love this simpler stripped option or going bold with a pretty pattern
All of the tile,
This trend really shines when applied to tile. There are so many beautiful tile options and finishes in a variety of hues, allowing you to fit the trend within the feeling of your home. Go with full wall takeovers in your bathroom, pantry or bar nook. Add a pop of the unexpected with a differently hued shower space. Zellige tile is such a popular (and stunning) choice. Or go simpler and add just a bit of a pattern (we all know I love checkers).
Accessories and pops of burgundy,
Wanting to add this trend in a simpler way? There are so many accessories and interesting ways to add this unexpected pop of color to your space. I also think one of the best parts of this color is its ability to match almost anything - light wood and stone, dark wood and stone, blue’s, greens, oranges. She’s perfect.
Furniture: Ever since I saw this video, I knew I will be purchasing this couch from Six Penny home. She looks luxurious and comfy AF. Pottery barn has a pretty merlot option for slipcovers. Skewing a bit more purple, but I still like this accent chair from Antropologie. Interior define has a beautiful wine colored option for their furniture, like this accent chair or these barstools (the barstools are SO good!).
Lamps: There are so many options out there and I found so many that I love. This metal lamp from H&M home, always a good deal (and on sale right now), this portable lamp is a bit more expensive but super versatile, Etsy always has options like this or this (I’ve ordered from this seller before and it is great), or this raffia Etsy find, I love the look and warmth of this one, this one is so unique and cool, and lastly I’m tempted to buy this vintage Etsy lamp for myself.
Accent tables: Ok starting with the most expensive, as this is an actual dining table, but could be such a stunning piece. I love the shiny, lacquered look of this side table, this one has a similar look but a more traditional shape, always love a simple “I” side table, and lastly this little “tini” table is the cutest lil’ accent.
Rugs: Nordic knots has some really pretty options here, like this plum tone vs. this reddish tone (I love the subtle stripes), I like this option from Perigold, and lastly this brick toned find from Lulu and Georgia. I’m sure there are a lot more options out there!
Office wall boards: This is random, but I love this idea for an office (or even a spot in your home where you want to tack cards, letters, drawings, etc). You could easily find a fabric (like this one?) and whats even better is that you can continue to update it quite easily when you find a new fabric that you like.
Random home accessories: The world of accessories is vast, so here’s a whole random batch.
Wall art - love this simple print or go bold with a large canvas look, or this mirror would be such a beautiful wall accent.
Knick knacks - these bow candleholders are 10/10, I love these witty cocktail napkins.
Trays - I am loving the witty sayings apparently, like this small tray or this larger option, another fun lacquered option, and you can never go wrong with a stone slab tray like this or this.
Bedding - This duvet cover from Buffy is the perfect color.
Pillows - Lulu and Georgia has some really pretty options right now on sale, like this simple option, this velvet circle option, and this contrasting linen option.
I could always go on, and on (and on) about interiors but I hope this inspires you to add some burgundy color and a bit of fun to your spaces! It is the color of the moment after all.

I know precisely what you mean when you mentioned the 90's paint trends. Every single house I walked into growing up had some kind of red room, but I seem to remember it paired with tan too. Maybe that's the secret to keeping it modern - stay away from the tan accent wall! Haha. I'd be so scared of missing the mark, but all of your inspirations pictures look SO different from what I remember from the 90's. I am especially sold on the burgundy tile.
that is also my fav six penny couch 😍 obsessedddd 🍷
