currently: pondering every detail in my house
happy sunday!
I always say that in my next life, I’d go into interior design instead of digital design. I absolutely love it and often find myself getting more inspiration from it than anything else.
I’ve pondered taking courses, but sometimes being self taught is even more fun. Our current house was absolutely a fixer upper and we’re so lucky we snagged it in 2019 before sh*t hit the fan. We thought this was our two-to-three year home, and here we are close to entering year five. I know so many of us are experiencing the rough market right now - there is no inventory, and anything good is going for wild amounts. This market will be really great for when we sell our current cutie, but no so great for the house hunt. I’m absolutely down for a project house but there aren’t even any of those where the pricing even remotely makes sense.
So, here I am, pinning and dreaming about the vibes i’d love to create in whatever is next for us. I’ve learned more than a few lessons from our current home with one of the biggest being that you can do whatever the hell you want - all that matters is that you like it. Much like fashion, it is so easy to get wrapped up in what is trending and you end up with a renovation that looks just like everyone else’s (then give yourself a year and suddenly your walls are labeled millennial grey and white cabinets are out).
Personally, I’d like to pick and choose from many different trends and combine them in a way that makes it uniquely me. I’d like to infuse more color, because I know I really love color. I’d like to get out of the narrative that unless you go neutral it won’t last - I am never going to be a neutral gal, I’m always going to buy the bright color option, so lets get over that idea and embrace it. I don’t want showroom vibes.
This post has the potential to be LONG, so here’s a first batch of interior thoughts that I’m loving to get us going! Take everything with a grain of salt - like I said, all that really matters is that you love it and could see yourself loving it for years to come.
currently trending, scallop everything
Scallop edges are definitely having a moment. Although I am a fan, I think this is more of a trend and would limit it to smaller accent pieces vs. featuring it on installed cabinetry or larger long-term-commitment furniture pieces. Personally I lean towards a slightly organic, homemade shape or a more puffy, untraditional scallop shape, but you do you!
Mirrors, like this or this, are a perfect detail for a powder room or entryway.
Lampshades and sconces are fun because you can lean into the traditional shape or have a variation that matches your style. This sconce is more organic vs. this blue beauty with gorgeous vintage-like details, or this sconce that’s perfect for a gallery wall.
I found this etsy shop an immediately fell in love and hit order on a small lamp that fills a spot in my home perfectly. don’t stress the ship time, it was faster!
You could definitely sneak scalloped edges on a slightly bigger accent piece, like this console table in a classic tone.
A way to make this trend have lasting power is by finding a vintage piece or a almost-scallop look. small accent stools are a great way to do just this, like this vintage french find, this twisted leg table set, or this perfectly sized side table.
Ceramics always fit the bill and you can find so many options depending on your style and spot to fill. Here’s a colored accent, a neutral (gorgeous) utensil holder, a very versatile wood bowl, or a more modern and unique plate set or catch all.
My most pricey finds, but I couldn’t help sharing, these metal shelves would be perfection in a bathroom or bar, or this fireplace screen is a gorgeous addition to a living room of any style.
keeping the classics alive
As someone with a original 1951 blue and black bathroom, I’ve been finding myself saving a lot of inspiration on how I can update it to feel beautiful today. I love some of these examples of keeping the color and charm alive, and although this section is bathroom specific, maybe it can be inspiring for another space in your home.
A unique, gorgeous mirror can be such a centerpiece. I’d keep your eye on etsy or marketplace for the perfect vintage or venetian mirror, like this or this.
You could go for a irregular shape too, like this - etsy, i’m telling you!
Kingston brass has beautiful fixtures, like this, and anthropologie can always help you nail a updated-classic vibe.
I love checking out this brand for antique-style lighting needs.
eternally cool stripes
Stripes are such a fun way to add a pop of color into your home! A eternally cool pattern that can go bright and juicy or neutral and calm, it can be an accent piece in so many ways.
Pillows, cushions and bedding are an easy way to test out this trend
I’ve always loved this stripped bedding from piglet in bed, it screams summer.
Christina lundsteen’s stripped pillows of every color combination are such a joy.
Bright, ruffle-y pillows and cushions of my dreams.
Casita dallas has done some beautiful bespoke built in’s in classic stripes.
An absolute splurge, but I love these handmade mirrors by follie chambre.
That wonderful green stripped bathroom above? here’s the tile!
Ok last quick things, this UO stripped outdoor table and these unreal candlestick holders are perfection.
I could go on, and on (and on) but I hope this inspires you as we’re collectively dreaming about spring and adding some color and fun to our spaces!
